My Attic 1937

My Attic is a new, casual bar and lounge that strives to provide a hospitable environment where guests come to feel safe, comfortable and relaxed.

Located in the historic Casa Sanchez adobe building on Alvarado St, My Attic is a new, casual bar and lounge that strives to provide a hospitable environment where guests come to feel safe, comfortable and relaxed. My Attic’s primary focus is to capture the antiquity that has made Monterey what it is today: history, heritage and hospitality.

My Attic is an integral part of Monterey’s rich history, as it originally operated in this same location from 1937 to 1972, under ownership of brothers Horace and Sam Coniglio. Monterey natives, Jason Coniglio and John Cardinalli, jumped at the opportunity to get back to their roots and bring My Attic’s original 1930’s style to downtown Monterey.

A second-generation native of Monterey, Jason Coniglio was born to a Sicilian family who came to the Peninsula a century ago from Sicily. Although he never knew the original bar, My Attic became legendary through pictures and stories shared among three generations of the Coniglio family. Jason vowed if the Casa Sanchez building ever became available again he would resurrect “My Attic” and pay homage to his grandfather’s prominent establishment.

The original My Attic opened shortly after prohibition was eradicated. By all accounts, My Attic was the most happening bar in town. John Steinbeck and Doc Ricketts reportedly “threw back a few” in the original My Attic and the legendary author referred to it in his writing.

“I have wanted to recreate my grandfather’s bar for as long as I can remember,” says Coniglio, who has his own history in hospitality on the Peninsula. “My father and uncles grew up cleaning the bar, and often were called out of class at Monterey High to go back and clean it better. As my grandfather established, this will not be the bar where people go to get drunk. My Attic will be the place where people stop in after a shift or a show for a nightcap in a town where the events may have ended but not the night.”

The new My Attic is an anachronism in a modern era, undergoing significant renovations while preserving the contour and charm of the original adobe building. The new My Attic will boast a bar in the front, as it did before, plus a lounge and new bar in the back, presented in warm olive tones offset by dark walnut woods. The vibe is, inviting, relaxing and fun, punctuated by relaxing house music and a menu of fresh, light local fare. From the street view, nightlife fans will be greeted with a remake of the original My Attic sign, flaunting illuminated letters that display vertically above the door entrance; capturing the old world charm of bars past.

The vintage style lounge features brown and black tufted chairs, sofas and ottomans, surrounded by candle lit sconces and classic 1930s décor. The food menu will be served all night and will include a charcuterie plate, cheese plate, caprese salad, caesar salad, marinated olives and focaccia bread, as well as cannolis, cheese cake and assorted Italian cookies for dessert. The drink menu will feature traditional cocktails such as a manhattan, old fashioned and classic martini, with a daily happy hour from 5-7pm. In addition, local and regional wines such as Bernardus and Chalone will also be available on the menu. My Attic will be open daily from 5pm – 2am, and will occasionally feature wine tastings hosted by local wineries.
