The product of a collaboration between Arrigo Boito and Giuseppe Verdi, Falstaff is a comic opera unlike any other. The title character, Sir John Falstaff, is so full of himself that he manages to take credit even when he’s the subject of ridicule. Verdi relished the opportunity to write a comic opera (only two of his 28 operas were comedies), and produced a witty, dynamic and elegant piece. See the humor for yourself in this West Bay Opera production at the Lucie Stern Theatre in Palo Alto.

It’s easy to try and reduce MC Hammer’s meteoric rise to fame down to parachute pants, stutter-steps and Rick James samples, but if you were around when Hammer ruled the airwaves in the early ‘90s, then you remember what a pop cultural force he was. And if you weren’t there, now’s your chance to find out what all the hoopla was about — and why the world couldn’t get enough of smash hits like “U Can’t Touch This” and “Too Legit to Quit.” The three-time Grammy winner comes to Mountain Winery with En Vogue and Tone Loc. One of the biggest female pop acts since The Supremes, En Vogue’s fusion of R&B with new jack swing and hip-hop rhythms made them one of the ‘90s best-selling musical groups with hits like "My Lovin’ (You’re Never Gonna Get It)," “You Don’t Have to Worry,” “Free Your Mind” and “Don’t Let Go.” Tone Loc’s famed for his distinctive voice and unmistakable delivery, which made the song “Wild Thing” a Grammy-winning hit.
One of the most bankable — and likable — stars in country music lights up the Shoreline Amphitheatre at Mountain View this summer. Brad Paisley’s sold more than 12 million albums, won three Grammy Awards and become a member of the Grand Ole Opry. His swift rise to the top came on the strength of his original songs, often laced with humor and pop-culture references, not to mention his insane guitar talent. He never fails to put out crowd-pleasing tunes that hit the sweet spot between country and pop, with favorites like “Whiskey Lullaby,” “I’m Gonna Miss Her (The Fishin’ Song)” with favorites like “Whiskey Lullaby,” “I’m Gonna Miss Her (The Fishin’ Song)” and more recent hits like “Perfect Storm” and “Today.” Chris Lane and Riley Green will open the concert.

Legendary blues singer-songwriter-guitarist John Mayall is in his 80s, but he never really left the road, keeping up a busy worldwide performance schedule and releasing more than 60 discs over the course of his historic career. It all started in the ‘60s, when Mayall formed the Bluesbreakers, the band that laid the blueprint for a generation of British blues and rock, and introduced Eric Clapton to the world. When Clapton and bassist Jack Bruce left to form Cream, Mayall continued on, and the Bluesbreakers launched the careers of many other rock legends, including Peter Green and John McVie of Fleetwood Mac, Mick Taylor of the Rolling Stones, and many more. Don’t miss “The Godfather of British Blues” at the Rio Theatre in Santa Cruz.

A versatile producer as well as an excellent solo rapper in his own right, Brotha Lynch Hung was born Kevin Mann in Sacramento, California. He hooked up with Master P for a 1993 EP named 24 Deep, but then went out on his own for his debut solo album, 1995’s Season of da Siccness. Mann worked on production for Master P’s I’m Bout It, E-40’s Southwest Riders, and Mr. Serv-On’s Life Insurance before turning back to his own career. Given a big push by Master P’s breakout success in the middle of 1997, Brotha Lynch Hung’s sophomore album, Loaded, followed in 1997. EBK4 followed in 2000 and both Blocc Movement and Virus appeared the next summer. The year 2002 was less busy, with Appearances: Book 1 being released in the spring and the Plague DVD following it that summer. His 2010 release Dinner and a Movie found him on Tech N9ne’s label, Strange Music. The concept album was followed by another, Coathanga Strangla, in 2011. Both efforts focused on the life of a serial killer.

The genius of Dwight Yoakam lies in the power of his appeal, a force that attracts serious rock ‘n’ rollers (he started out opening for punk bands) to country music diehards (Johnny Cash called him his “favorite male artist”). What unites these groups — which also include hipsters, honky-tonkers and roots rockers — is Yoakam’s maverick blend of country, rock, Americana, pop and soul. He almost single-handedly saved country music in the ‘80s, his “cowpunk” sound rescuing a genre that had grown too slick. He has sold more than 25 million albums worldwide, and he’s a 21-time nominated, multiple Grammy winner. Don’t miss Dwight Yoakam in concert at The Mountain Winery in Saratoga. Alejandro Escovedo opens the show.

The Taming of Shrew tells the story of Katherine and Petruchio, two hot-headed lovers on opposite sides of the marriage issue: he wants it, she doesn’t! When our tale opens, Baptista is desperate to marry off his head-strong eldest daughter, Petruchio is anxious for a wealthy bride, and Katherine is having none of it. Staged at Stratford Festival and named on many 2018 year-end critics “best of” lists, the Stratford Festival’s “riveting” and “exhilarating” (The New York Times) production of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus gets a screening at San Jose’s Hammer Theatre Center. The production is directed by genre-defying theatre artist Robert Lepage and stars André Sills. Lepage takes the story of the rise and fall of a legendary general who must face off against the angry Roman mob and infuses it with the energy of Occupy Wall Street and the Arab Spring. He “wrangles a difficult play into a heart-stopping narrative” (Chicago Tribune), “rendering a clear and cinematic version that’s riveting, invigorating and smart” (The Globe and Mail). Enjoy light fare and a pre-show conversation with San Jose State University’s Dean of Humanities and the Arts, Shannon Miller, starting one hour prior to the start of the event.

Academy Award-winner Helen Mirren (The Queen) plays Queen Elizabeth II in the Tony-winning production of The Audience. Captured live from London’s West End in 2013, the original broadcast is screened at San Jose’s Hammer Theatre Center to mark National Theatre Live’s 10th birthday. For 60 years, Queen Elizabeth II has met with each of her 12 prime ministers in a private weekly meeting. This meeting is known as the Audience. No one knows what they discuss, not even their spouses. From the old warrior Winston Churchill, to Iron Lady Margaret Thatcher and finally David Cameron, the Queen advises her prime ministers on all matters both public and personal. Through these private audiences, we see glimpses of the woman behind the crown and witness the moments that shaped a monarch.

One of Broadway’s most classic and beloved tales comes to cinema screens in the largest-ever production of this breathtaking musical. Set in 1933, 42nd Street tells the story of Peggy Sawyer, a talented and ambitious young performer who gets her big break on Broadway after arriving in New York City from her hometown of Allentown, Pennsylvania. She’s cast in the chorus of musical-within-a-musical Pretty Lady, but the show’s diva star, Dorothy Brock, takes an instant dislike to the new girl. Then Dorothy is injured and a new, young talent is needed to lead the show. Filmed in 2018 at London’s Theatre Royal, this production is directed by the show’s original writer, Mark Bramble. It’s a stage extravaganza full of crowd-pleasing tap dances, popular musical-theater standards like “Lullaby of Broadway,” “We’re in the Money,” “42nd Street” and more, plus show stopping ensemble production numbers. See it in HD on the big screen at San Jose’s Hammer Theatre Center.

Dazzling dialogue and larger-than-life characters make this farce every bit as fun today as when it was first penned by Noël Coward back in 1939. Present Laughter follows several days in the life of self-obsessed actor Garry Essendine. Juggling his considerable talent, ego and libido, Garry prepares for an extended overseas trip in the midst of his worsening mid-life crisis. And soon his plans are further complicated by his wife, a beautiful ingenue, his agents and a number of starstruck admirers. Crazed playwrights, secret trysts, unexpected twists — it’s all part of the farcical fun when Present Laughter comes to Pear Theatre in Mountain View.

In the opening moments of Eugene Ionesco’s masterpiece of absurdist satire, a rhinoceros rampages through a village square. At the local café, people argue over what they saw. Was it really a rhino, or just fake news? As the eccentric villagers shed refined façades for hides and horns — smashing windows and crushing flowerbeds — rumpled everyman Berenger faces a desperate choice: take a stand against the armored brutes or join the mindless herd? This outrageously comedic story of a civilized community shifting from defiance to compliance is chillingly resonant and riotously funny. From Tony Award–winning director Frank Galati comes an all-new adaptation of this wickedly entertaining show about power, conformism and mass culture. Don’t miss Rhinoceros at San Francisco’s American Conservatory Theater.

“To date a girl before, you just had to knock a guy off a horse.” That’s just a small sample of the stream-of-consciousness silliness you can expect from D.C.-bred comedian Hampton Yount when he takes the stage of Rooster T. Feathers Comedy Club in Sunnyvale. He was crowned D.C. Improv’s “Funniest Local Comedian” in 2008 and has since made the move to L.A., where he’s appeared on Conan, Last Comic Standing and The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail, and written for such shows as Ridiculousness and Loiter Squad. Yount was named a “one to watch” comic by L.A. Weekly and a “top comedian to watch” by Esquire.
